Draw Whorl Extension for SketchUp

Draw Whorl

I made the Draw Whorl plug in/extension for SketchUp for a simple way to generate threads for your models. It allows fixed-radius thread section, as well as an optional tapered-thread section. You can specify the starting and ending radius for the tapered section, and how many revolutions of the fixed-radius and tapered-radius sections. You can specify the pitch of the threads, the length of the threads, and the width of the outer edge of the threads. The help page has additional tools to help you generate settings files for standard bolt and screw threads.

  1. Hi Rick,

I'm trying to use Draw Whorl in SketchUp 2019, but I can't get it to work. Do you have any suggestions?

Also, I would like to use it with millimetres, and doing the conversions is tedious. Do you have any advice for modifying it so it will work with millimetres?

Finally, I saw from your profile that you're a photography enthusiast. Great! I want to use your extension to make photographic bits via 3D printing, so perhaps you can understand my need for millimetres.

Right now, I have an older telephoto lens (Olympus OM Zuiko 350mm ƒ/2.8) with an internal filter holder. I'd like to make additional filter holders, but need to put a 46mm x 0.75 thread in there. It also needs a 10mm x 1.25 machine screw.

I'd be happy to help you with any photography bits you'd like to 3D print!

Thanks for making Draw Whorl available, and if you are no longer available or are unable to help, then perhaps I'll take a crack at modifying the extension myself.

  2. Hi Rick
I have just used your extension Draw Whorl to draw a screw conveyor flight it worked perfectly for a plain screw.
If I want to draw a tapered screw though then the pitch i need to draw should increase gradually through the distance of the screw.
Is it possible you could look at your program to include a "End Pitch" and a "Start Pitch"
    This would be very helpful.
    Thanks
