I got the doors made, and hung. I got one coat of milk paint on the bottom section. I am figuring out what to put on for a top-coat. Will try water based poly tinted with some red die. Decided not to put the white X pattern on the doors.

I got the drawers done for the lower cabinet. Now for the doors. 

Kitchen Hutch back and drawers

I got the back assembled. It was much the same as the end assemblies, Pocket screws in rails and stiles with stub tenons and grooves for them and the panels.

On to the drawers:

I debated what to do about the drawer sides. I bought some 3/4 maple, but could bring myself to plane it down to 1/2 inch. I called Jim and he had some oak boards that he couldn't sell as 3/4 because of defects, so I bought those and milled them down. The plans called for hidden dovetails drawers front and back cut on a jig with a router. I am cutting mine as through dovetails front and back by hand. They don't need to be hidden, because the poplar drawer fronts are attached later.

I found plans for this hutch online.

I had a bunch of poplar already and used it for the carcass construction.

I started with the base, specifically the end assemblies.

Then I added the base bottom and sub-top. The bottom is let into dados that run across the end assemblies.

I made some square braces to assist the dry assembly of the carcass components. They look like stealth fighters.

Then I added the dividers. I also added the drawer guides, supports, and kickers to the dividers (not shown).

Next the face frame assembly for the front

Then I made the trim edging for the top and glued it on. I also made the two adjustable shelves and drilled the holes for the shelf support pins.

Next will be the back, which is constructed much as the end assemblies, with grooves to house the rails and panels to the styles.

 Well it has been ages since I posted anything to this Blog. I thought I could at least upload a bunch of pictures of various projects I have been working on over the years.
